A Spiritual Giant in my Community

We found out this morning that a good friend of ours, Duane, passed away last night. I have spent much time this morning reflecting on the life he lived as well as the impact the Calder's example has had on our family.

We unfortunately have only known the Calder's for 2 years now. In that time we had the opportunity to have them in our Gospel Principles Class and got to know them on a much more intimate level than I think we would have had the opportunity for otherwise. The class was small and consisted of maybe 12 to 15 people at the largest. We shared a lot of personal stories and experiences which enabled everybody in the class to feel the spirit so strongly with each lesson. I witnessed first hand the strength of the Calders as they have endured Duane's health problems and words can not express how grateful I am to have had those moments to learn of Duane's testimony of the gospel. In the face of so much trial he showed strength of character in all that he did. I know The Lord was pleased with his continual efforts.

I have wondered today what I could do to help them. I am struggling with feeling like we are not close enough for me to just stop by and yet there must be something that I can do to show my love and support for their family. More than anything my prayers are with them. I have thought about the scriptural references to taking care of the widowed and I know that now is our time as a community to step up. To help financially, emotionally and spiritually. To look out for the well being of this incredible family not just in the present but to help Kristin raise her beautiful daughters. It comes down to the adage that it takes a village to raise a child. Now so more than ever.

Thank you Duane for a beautiful life lived and thank you Kristin and girls for standing stalwart amidst one of the biggest trials a family can face. You inspire my family immensely. We love you so much.

Pushed to the Limits Sometimes

I have been pretty overwhelmed lately. Actually it seems to be a recurring theme in my life that I am not very pleased about. I tend to wonder why it is that I get into situations where I feel overwhelmed. I question my ability to put my life in the right perspective. So, next week in particular is going to be beastly! My larger roles will include....teacher, preschool teacher, employee (24 hours next week), mother, maid, and cook. The problem is that I don't feel like I am excelling at any of them. For instance Zach. He needs me to be a great teacher, to give him my best and most undivided attention. Instead I am giving my all to stay awake and the rest goes to him and Jillian.

Loving Moments

I had one of the most tender moments as a mother the other day. Somehow, as our family was sitting around the kitchen table talking, we got on the subject of who we would like to meet when we die. We all felt like there isn't anybody famous that we would even care to meet. We then started talking about biblical people. I said I would like to meet Noah, or Captain Moroni. I was sure that I am not the only one that wants to meet them, I'm sure they will be inundated with people wanting to meet them! Then Andrew got very solemn. He got very emotional as he said he would like to meet his Heavenly Mother. He then looked at me and said, if she was more amazing and glorious than me that he couldn't even imagine how incredible meeting her would be. He cried, I cried and we hugged a gentle, loving, mom and son hug.

Broccoli Salad

My children have this thing for broccoli salad and they beg me to make it weekly. Every time I make it I become mom of the week around here which I happen to like! One would think that it might be odd for kids to love broccoli salad, and I am not necessarily thinking it is normal, but I do know it is pretty tasty. I decided for today's post to share my recipe. Beware, I am all about easy so don't expect something elaborate, and I cook for a crowd so if you want to make this adjust to your size of family. 1/2 package of broccoli florets from Costco (chopped) 1/2 red cabbage (shredded) 2 handfuls (or add to desired preference) of Craisins 2 handfuls (or add to desired preference) of real bacon bits 2 handfuls (or add to desired preference) of unsalted sunflower seeds 1/2 a bottle of Kraft Creamy Poppyseed Dressing Mix Seriously, if my kids scarf this salad down I promise most kids will.
