What is it about packing for a trip that brings out the beastly side of mom and child alike?
Today we are packing for a trip to California. I am almost totally ecstatic other than the preparation to leave. I certainly didn't make it any easier on myself by upping our Estimated time of departure by almost 24 hours but I couldn't see any reason to not leave sooner since we don't have anything planned for tomorrow. This of course has put undue stress upon me and I will quite frankly admit to being a bit on the ornery side about EVERYTHING!!!
The biggest problem is my dinky washer and dryer. I on the one hand am so grateful to have any washer and dryer at all. My washer broke beyond repair last year and I was able to find a washer on Craigs list for free. Yep, free is a great word and I would be so ungrateful for not being grateful but as grateful as I am I am still ungrateful. Phew, following still? Anyway, The washer is of course half of the capacity of my old washer and so this whole week I have been running the thing non-stop! The only time it has not been running was during the few short hours of sleep I have had.
Our old dryer also died beyond repair last year and my sweet, wonderful, incredibly generous cousin Ty had a dryer sitting in his garage that he wasn't using and donated to our cause. Again, I am so grateful that I have a dryer that is actually drying my clothes, it just only dries about half of the clothes that my old dryer dried.
So then you add that to the comments tonight that came from my kids. It went something like this.
"Abby, you need to go and get me another pair of your pants that do not have holes in them."
"I don't have any more pants, they are all in the dirty clothes still"
"Are you kidding me? When did you finally bring them down to be washed, because I have been washing clothes all week!"
"At the beginning of the week when you told me to, mom."
"Aaahh! Ok, fine, Zach, I still need 3 more pairs of pants and another pair of socks for your bag."
"Mom, I don't have anymore clean either, they are still in the wash like Abby's stuff."
That was honestly the tip of the iceberg. Here we are 14 hours away from pulling out of the driveway and I am still doing laundry just so that we can pack the stinkin' bags. Then, Clairissa couldn't find her Ipod, Jillian doesn't have ANY spring clothes, I haven't even started packing, and I am starving because there isn't anything in the house to even eat at this point since I am not going to buy stuff that will just go bad with us being gone for 5 days. I seriously need a vacation from getting ready for my vacation.
I should actually be in bed, but I am really enjoying the peace and quiet that will not be mine to enjoy a few short hours from now. If only I was Sam on Bewitched and could just snap my fingers and have everything fly into a tiny little bag.
