With the issues that have been brought to the forefront of our attention because of the election today, I have reflected a lot on standing up for my standards. In particular I have been thinking about Proposition 8 in CA and my feelings about gay marriage.
I feel strongly in keeping the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman. I was raised, as were so many Americans, to be a God fearing person who adheres to the 10 commandments and the other words and commandments of the bible. I was taught to take seriously the commitments that I make to my God. I was taught that the bible teaches us to have faith and stand up for our beliefs even when it is the unpopular or difficult choice. I really do think that the majority of Americans have been taught this as well. Taught that God and His teachings come before everything else in this world.
So, at what point did our society stop following God and his commandments and start supporting those whose choices are contrary to the commandments of God? My heart breaks for those many parents, siblings, and friends of gay and lesbian people who have chosen to support the person's decision instead of standing up for what is right. Why is it not ok anymore to say, I love you and I will always love you but I do not condone your choice? I stand up today and say that God loves people who are gay and lesbian just as much as he loves everybody else on this earth. It is NOT our place to judge them. It is, however, our place to stand as witnesses of Christ at ALL times and in ALL places and in All things. Does it mean we are not Christ Like? Do we have to shun those who do not follow all the teaching of Christ? NO! I personally know people who live this lifestyle who I love more than words can express. They are beautiful children of God and it is my privilege to be a part of their lives. I, however, can not, nor will I ever, say that what they chose is ok. I do, however, put it in God's hands.
I love my Savior more than I love popularity, more than I love my friends and family and more than I love any of my worldly possessions. I would give up anything I have on this earth for what I feel is the Lord's cause. I join with my loved ones in CA and stand for proposition 8. It is my belief that it is the Lord's will that we keep marriage a sacred union between a man and a woman and as unpopular as that statement is, I do not apologize for it in any way.

This has been a hard issue for me and some of my very liberal friends. I had to come to the conclusion myself that ultimately, the Lord is far more wise and knowing than I. If he asked me to support this, than I would.
I also believe the church had every right to be a part of this issue. The church always can speak out on political issues, and they should.
Me thinks this is just the beginning of a lot of tests of our faith.
I don't understand why the majority is forced to change and accept a widely unnatural lifestyle. Our bodies are made to perform natural sexual acts. How can any other way be natural? Something so beautiful between a husband and wife, has been manipulated by same sex attractions for thousands of years. Does this make it right and acceptable in the eyes of our God? No. So we must continue to fight and uphold the teachings of our Savior. Don't become complacent and think that you cannot do anything about it. If we stick together, we will make a difference!
Respecting people who believe differently than you doesn't mean you have to change your own views to match theirs.
Respecting people who believe differently means disagreeing without being disagreeable.
One of the things that has been very troubling to me this past week is the extreme hatred and intolerance (which also shows a lack of respect) I've seen from so many people on the 'No on 8' side of the issue.
Frankly, if they want to garner support for their lifestyle and be accepted for who they are, they might want to consider acting on the old saying, "You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar."
Beck - don't apologize for your beliefs. Ever. I know you are a loving and kind woman. I know that the children you send in to the world as adults will be the kind who wouldn't dream of being mean-spirited bullies...and our world will be a better place for having the kind of people in it that your children will be.
Keep your chin up! :)
(PS...If Bully doesn't like your street corner prayers, the decent thing for him/her to do would be to stop reading your blog.)
