Summer of Love.......For Reading

It all started when I was a child. I have said before that I was a nerd, but one can not, without having gone through it themselves, fathom how miserable and lonely my life was unless they too experienced that same misery and loneliness. To pass the time and escape from my woes I quickly became an avid reader. I loved reading, and it really didn't matter what it was. My earliest memories of reading were The Bobsey Twins Mysteries followed by Nancy Drew Mysteries. One day I got to be a young child loved by everyone in the school, the next day I got to be a young adult driving and solving perplexing mysteries. I also read my textbooks. As soon as the new year started I would bring home my literature text book and read it from cover to cover.

As the years wore on I graduated to more sophisticated literature like Jane Eyre, Mary Higgins Clark, and Phyllis Whitney. I no longer read for an escape as much as a pure love of reading itself. I still read my literature books as soon as I received them (some things never change) but my reading was a little more sparse once I was in high school and found a crowd that I could fit in with.

Years later I find that reading has become the popular thing to do. Who knew that I would one day find claim to popularity in some fashion. This summer in particular has been a summer for reading. I do find that it is once again an escape for me. Sometimes being a mommy is a bit exhausting and a good book takes that stress away even if it us for just a moment. I was counting up how many books I have read since the kids got out of school and I think I am up to 6. Of course Breaking Dawn is on the list (and yes, my girls and I did stand in line at Smiths at midnight to pick up a copy that I finished reading by Saturday evening!) I have also read All These Things Shall Give Thee Experience, Princess Academy, The 13th Reality, The Host, Sudden Storms, and my favorite These is My Words.

I have a slight problem with reading though and I find that I am not alone in this issue. I can not put down a book once I start it. I can't handle it, the suspense kills me. My husband can read for awhile before he goes to bed but not I! I start a book at night and then I am awake until I either finish the book or can't keep my eyes open a second longer. At any rate it is at least half the night.

Now that I have finished Breaking Dawn I have decided that I need to get back to writing instead of reading. I have great ideas but my reading gets in the way. Mark quite often tells me that I need to get out of my own way. This would be the case here. I need to put on some good music and get back to those ideas that are floating around in my head.

Hey Becky! What a BEAUTIFUL family! Thanks for your comments. I LOVE your blog! I'm pretty new to it and still trying to figure things out. The hardest is finding the time to write. I read too much as well. I'm on the huge waiting list for Breaking Dawn at the Library. I can never seem to come up with the money to buy books. I did recently finish the Host and I loved it. Anyway, you won my giveaway so if you could email me with your mailing address that would be awesome. I'm excited to keep in touch. Oh, and can I join the Merryweather family blog? TTYS

Broccoli Salad

My children have this thing for broccoli salad and they beg me to make it weekly. Every time I make it I become mom of the week around here which I happen to like! One would think that it might be odd for kids to love broccoli salad, and I am not necessarily thinking it is normal, but I do know it is pretty tasty. I decided for today's post to share my recipe. Beware, I am all about easy so don't expect something elaborate, and I cook for a crowd so if you want to make this adjust to your size of family. 1/2 package of broccoli florets from Costco (chopped) 1/2 red cabbage (shredded) 2 handfuls (or add to desired preference) of Craisins 2 handfuls (or add to desired preference) of real bacon bits 2 handfuls (or add to desired preference) of unsalted sunflower seeds 1/2 a bottle of Kraft Creamy Poppyseed Dressing Mix Seriously, if my kids scarf this salad down I promise most kids will.

2009 Family Pictures

We had the funnest silliest adventure today. We decided that since Rachael's braces are off and Mark and I have lost a few pounds that it would be a great time to take our family pictures. I have seen some really cool looking pictures done at the salt flats so we took a drive out there. Yep, 2 hours later, after making a 20 min. past our destination detour, having to stop at the only gas station in the middle of nowhere for a bathroom trip, and just as the sun was going down over the mountain we pulled up. The couch was very quickly unloaded and then in a very hasty 10-15 min. We sat, posed, and pushed the button to take our picture over and over again. It was such a good time with all of us laughing and enjoying every minute of the warm light and family bonding. Please note that these pictures are straight out of the camera and I have not edited them yet. Even with that being said, I LOVE them!!! It is just what I was envisioning. Once editing is done I think they will be quite ...

Questions Answered, Questions Created

Today was Mark's appointment with the pulmonologist at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. I wish I could say that we came away with answers, good or bad, but instead Mark and I just feel confused. We got to the appointment about 15 minutes early which gave us plenty of time to fill out the piles of paperwork. As we were filling out the paperwork we noticed a sign that was posted with the names of each of the doctors and whether each of them were on time or not. According to the sign our doctor was right on time so after finishing the paperwork we sat back expecting that we would get in within a few minutes. Well, a few minutes turned into a half hour, which turned into an hour plus. Finally they called us back to our room and the nurse assured us that the doctor was just writing up a couple prescriptions for the previous patient and then he would be right in. Of course right in meant another 20 minutes or so. The doctor finally came in and proceeded to ask us questions about Ma...
