A few of My favorite things

One of my favorite things in life is to see the tender mercies of the Lord in my life. How loving and merciful He is to me. I testify that he answers my (and each of our) prayers. So often though my prayers are not answered as I had hoped but, of course in his infinite wisdom, they are answered better than I could have ever hope for or imagined. That is to say that my answers are not always the way I would want them to be in fact quite often on the contrary. Always, though, my prayers are answered and in the Lord's timing.

I made a choice to homeschool Zach this year. I have felt strong about my choice to homeschool and yet this choice has brought much concern about my ability to teach Zach the things he desperately needs. I have put it to prayer and as of this morning I had no idea what I was going to do for a lesson plan or how to personally fill in the gaps in his education. Then, of course at the last minute when I had been pushed to my limits of patience, the answer came. I spoke with my good friend and tutor, Sheila Watkins, who gave me the news that I needed. It turns out that there is an electronic elementary charter school, and it is free to students in Utah. They will send me all of the books and electronic materials that he needs and it is all paid for through the state of Utah. Along with material he also will have a teacher that checks our progress on a regular basis and answers any questions I need help with.

My next favorite thing is my flowers and front porch rocking chairs. The Lord has blessed us with such a beautiful world. I know there is a God because of the beauty of the world around me. This year I planted pink and white flowers and they thrived, which is a definite first for me. I have sisters who are in heaven when they garden. Not me! And yet, I have to admit that I don't mind dead heading my small patch of flowers. The color is so perky and happy that looking at my flowers brings me great and simple joy. Whenever I have a moment of stress I will quite often head out to the front porch and rock in my chair. I love watching the kids play, chatting with the neighbors, reading a good book, catching up with my husband, and enjoying the beauty of this earth all from my porch.

Quickly fading from our summer is another of my favorite things and that is summer evenings. Almost every evening the neighborhood wakes up from it's hot sleepy slumber and for just a few moments we all get to be friends again. This magic happens about the time the sun goes down behind the houses when it is still bright outside but the sun is no longer beating down on us. Almost every evening a slight breeze picks up, cools us down, and allows us a chance to escape from our indoor prison. I love chatting with the neighbors and getting to know them on a more personal level. My favorite time of year is the summer evening. At least, even though the days are hot, they cool down in the evening enough to get outside. In the winter it is so cold nobody ever comes out, especially not me!

Sometimes it is hard taking that step into the darkness (Like homeschooling) and not knowing what you are going to do... But when you follow that feeling he will always help make a path! You are such a good example of that!! Thanks for sharing! I LOVE your flowers as well! So pretty.

Becky! You won my last book giveaway and I need your address! Could you email it to me?
That's really neat about your homeschooling. How old is Andrew now? I'm homeschooling my Andrew too. ;) Of course he's only four and I'm teaching preschool to more than just him but it still counts, right? I will miss these summer evenings too. I wrote about the neighborhood waking up a while ago during our short little spring. I love it when everyone is outside chatting and the kids are playing. And I definitely covet your front yard.
PS You are kicking my booty at those facebook games.

Broccoli Salad

My children have this thing for broccoli salad and they beg me to make it weekly. Every time I make it I become mom of the week around here which I happen to like! One would think that it might be odd for kids to love broccoli salad, and I am not necessarily thinking it is normal, but I do know it is pretty tasty. I decided for today's post to share my recipe. Beware, I am all about easy so don't expect something elaborate, and I cook for a crowd so if you want to make this adjust to your size of family. 1/2 package of broccoli florets from Costco (chopped) 1/2 red cabbage (shredded) 2 handfuls (or add to desired preference) of Craisins 2 handfuls (or add to desired preference) of real bacon bits 2 handfuls (or add to desired preference) of unsalted sunflower seeds 1/2 a bottle of Kraft Creamy Poppyseed Dressing Mix Seriously, if my kids scarf this salad down I promise most kids will.

Questions Answered, Questions Created

Today was Mark's appointment with the pulmonologist at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. I wish I could say that we came away with answers, good or bad, but instead Mark and I just feel confused. We got to the appointment about 15 minutes early which gave us plenty of time to fill out the piles of paperwork. As we were filling out the paperwork we noticed a sign that was posted with the names of each of the doctors and whether each of them were on time or not. According to the sign our doctor was right on time so after finishing the paperwork we sat back expecting that we would get in within a few minutes. Well, a few minutes turned into a half hour, which turned into an hour plus. Finally they called us back to our room and the nurse assured us that the doctor was just writing up a couple prescriptions for the previous patient and then he would be right in. Of course right in meant another 20 minutes or so. The doctor finally came in and proceeded to ask us questions about Ma...

Mmmm, Chocolate!

I have said before that I love photography. My other love is children and my favorite thing to photograph is children. I love capturing their innocent moments. My kids have gotten pretty good at ignoring the camera although Rachael taught Jillian how to say cheese (when the camera was pointed at her) when she was still a baby. Last night I made homemade brownies. They were so good and so easy to make. Of course the kids got to lick the mixing spoons. Since I have so many kids they have to take turn on who gets to lick the spoons though. This time it was the older kids turn. Jillian, being the baby and totally spoiled, still got a utensil to lick. She was so adorable with the spatula that I had to grab the camera.
