Wedding Day (day 3)

Today was the big day! One of the best parts of our vacation was being able to sleep until we felt like getting up and today was no exception. Mark and I got up around 9:30 and leisurely got moving on the day. We met over at Judy's house around 10:30 and then Judy and I headed over to the salon to get our hair done.

Upon entering the salon I had heart palpitations take over. The salon was something straight out of the 80's and I really don't think it has been updated in that many years. Then there were all of the old 70 year old Floridian women everywhere. I'm talking about the kind that wear more make-up than 2 women half their age. Apparently these women are the salon's bread and butter so to say. The hair dressers were also at least in their 50's and I didn't see an update hair style on any of them. You know how it is when you judge how your hair is going to look by how stylish your hair dresser is? Well, I was scared to death. I kept thinking that hopefully I would have enough time to go home and re-do my hair before the wedding and then when I found out that it cost $50 to get my hair done I started stressing about how I was going to have to live with whatever the woman did good or bad.

When it was my turn to get my hair washed I felt like I had been through the wringer. The water was cold and the woman scrubbed harder and rougher than anyone else I have ever had my hair done from. Usually the scalp massage is my favorite part of the process but this time I was counting down the seconds until she was finally finished with the torture. After my hair was dry she asked me what I had planned on doing with my hair. I had already discussed this with my hair dresser so I had a pretty good idea. I told her that I wanted flat iron curls and she said, "what is that?" I showed her how to do them and she started on my hair. after finishing the bottom layer of my hair she gave me the mirror and asked me what I thought and if this was what I had envisioned. I told her I wasn't sure all the while screaming inside. She then said to me "do you like it? becuase I don't." (sigh of relief) She then told me that she envisioned a more romantic curl and curled a piece with her curling iron. She asked what I though of it ,like I could tell with one piece curled, and I told her to go for it. I thought that at least she could do a better job with her medium instead of something she doesn't use. Anyway, blessing of all blessings, once she used what she was comfortable with my hair went really smoothly and it turned out really cute. Whew!!!!!!!

From there we headed over to Lowe's. Judy wasn't happy with the look of the fake foliage at the church so she decided that we needed to get fresh flowers. Dad wanted to just buy pre-potted flowers but Judy was worried about expense so 3 hours before the wedding the four of us were in Lowe's picking out flowers and pots. One hundred and thirty five dollars and a trunk full of flowers later we left there and got to the house to plant flowers in 3 pots with 2 hours until the wedding. It was such a funny site. Mark and I sitting out on the front porch potting like mad people. There was a storm coming in and we were sure it would start dumping on us any second (which would have been a bad story for my hair) so we were really stressed. We were in potting soil up to our elbows and the lilies that we planted had pollen on the middle part of the flower that got all over us. We finished grabbed some lunch and as we were eating Mark asked me how much time I needed to get ready to go. Judy answered Mark by saying, "oh, she only needs 20 minutes". LOL We ran back to the hotel, changed our clothes, scrubbed the pollen off of our hands and were back at the house with just under an hour until the wedding.

Mark had such a fun opportunity to help his dad with the details of his tux and then they headed out and I stayed back to help Judy get dressed. We arrived at church on time (whew!) and from there the wedding transpired. It was a beautiful ceremony and Mark and I teared up more than once as Mark's Dad, and then Judy both choked on their vows as tears welled up in their eyes. From the wedding we headed over to the reception at McCormick and Schmicks. It turns out though that Mark's dad's car had major problems driving to the reception. It died out a few times and we learned later that Florida doesn't regulate it's gas so he got a tank of gas that had water in it. Back to the reception though. The lighting was perfect the setting was intimate and the room was cozy. I tried a few new dishes, like oyster Rockefeller, and they were all amazingly incredible. Fresh always does wonders for the taste of sea food. For dinner I ordered Tomato Mozzarella Salad and Shrimp Scampi. Mmmmmm! Yep, I didn't stress about my diet while I was down there and it was a nice respite. They had creme brulee for desert which was divine and then the wedding cake was cut and served. The cake was made by The Cake Lady and I am not kidding when I say i have never ever had cake so delicious in my life. It puts all other cakes to shame. All in all it was a beautiful day and Mark and I were so honored to be able to share it with Dad and Judy. Thank you!

What I Would Tell My Younger Self

Last week was a really tough week for our Bishop and family. First, my husband went out of town on business and it happened to overlap with our daughter and her babies visiting us. So, three days that she was here, he didn't get to see her. Then, he flew back into town Wed. around town and then we drove our daughter to the airport Thursday morning at 4:30. Yes, that is early, and yes, we did go back to bed when we got home. ;o) Then he worked all day Thursday and I will spare you the details but it was a bad day. His non-boss boss was in a foul mood and he got the brunt of it.  Thursday evening he had the yearly ward audit and didn't get home until close to 10. Friday was another fun filled day at work, and then Friday evening and Saturday were filled with youth conference which he attended and was a chaperone for during the entire event. Sunday was a rough "bishop" day that he couldn't talk about, and quite frankly, I didn't want to hear about.  That leads us...

Officially in the Limelight!

I had an interesting experience this evening. Without divulging more than I should, let's just say that I was told that people in my area are concerned that I have not kept my information about the stake changes private until the appropriate time. They were concerned that because I dated my blog post for the date of my writing some people thought that I had said something before the stake split announcement. Let me assure you that this isn't the case. I date my posts for the day that I write them but I didn't post them until Nov. 9th, the afternoon of the day of Stake conference. With that being said, this experience brought to my attention how much being a bishop's wife really is somewhat like being on show for everyone. Sometimes you are scrutinized and it is good, and sometimes it isn't so good.  I felt truly inspired to write and keep this blog so that people can get an idea of what a normal bishop's family is like. This however can be difficult because I ...
